Why I can't take the Wii seriously.

Most of you may know that I have a dislike of the wii console. I did once own a Gamecube and that was probably the last "proper" console Nintendo will ever make. Gamecube's only downfall was its controller and slightly odd look but it eaisly outclassed the Wii in every way.

Here is my list of why I cant take wii seriously. If you dont like it (that goes to you deadmetalhead and sidar) dont read it.

1.The gimmick-Nintendo has chosen to market its controller rather then its console. Every advertisment has been about how you can turn it into a gun or a steering wheel or a knife or a spatula or how you can just hold it in one hand and fling it around.. The basic message I get is that they want the viewer to focus on the wiimote so that they can forget about the less then impressive specs of the wii. Gimmicks do indeed sell fast for people who fall for them but for people like me, a gimmick isnt enough. I need something more then controller. I need a capable console and that is something the wii cant provide.

2.Underpowered hardware-Honestly, this is what is the biggest downfall of the Wii. Its specs can't even be considered current generation. It has little procesing power and even lesser graphics capabilities. It makes me feel like Nintendo didnt even try or that they were just trying to save a much money as they could while making it. This has of course, led to some very outdated graphics and even worse making it impossible for certain 3rd party games to port to the wii. Most developers dont even want to touch it since they can make better games on ps3 and 360. You may say graphics are not everything but we all know that is not true. When we see new consoles we expect them to have better graphics as well as improve in hardware. If the Wii had the specs of the 360 (hell even half the specs would have worked) I would probably consider it a great console but these specs simply show that Nintedo didnt want to put any effort into their machine.

3.Casual gaming-I like to define them as "games so simple that a toddler could play them". Casual games are not something that should be taken so seriously. They are fine in moderation but a console focused on them is a terrible move. Most people who buy games want a game that is a challenge and not a simple causal game plus that fact is that hardcore gamers buy more games then casual gamers do. We have not seen a casual games sell anywhere near Halo 3 or GTA levels and we probably never will. Gamers want serious and challenging games not mini games.

4.Recycling old franchises-Mario, Zelda, Smash brothers, Pokemon. These games have been remade over and over and over (copy paste that about 500 times and you will get the idea). These are all great franchises but I have not seen many new things from Nintendo in a while. While ps3 and 360 have introduced dozens of new franchises Nintendo has basically released more Mario and Zelda games. Why do they never make anything new? Are they afraid to take a chance or are they just out of ideas. You decide.

5.Wii fit-Quite honestly its a new low in gaming. Wii fit is like those "weight loss pills" you see on TV. It claims you will lose weight by using it but the fact is you really won't. Its about as silly as saying Guitar hero will teach you how to play a real guitar. It seems now the gaming industry has found a way to prey on the obese people and take their money. What's even worse is that people are actually falling for this. I hear all the time that "it will be great to get fit and have fun at the same time!" It just shows that Nintendo knows their consumers gullibility very well.

6.Not enough games for teenagers-Whenever I walk into my local game store I look at the wii games. There is a lot of them but I mostly only see E rated games, A few teen rated games and a few M rated games (usually the M rated game is manhunt and No more Heros). Im no kid anymore. Childrens games dont amuse me. Then again nintendo has never been one to depart from the 'family friendly" style of their games but more mature games would help me take the wii more seriously.

Sweet read. It's nice to read blogs that, even though one may not agree with the comments, stimulate some sort of intellectual thought on matters of surrounding the industry.

Why I can't take you seriously. Gimmick is the sixaxis, Underpowered hardware was the PS2 last gen which did awesome, Casual gaming I just need to point out the PS2 again, Recycling franchises I'll point out everyone in the business, Wii Fit isn't for everyone just like MGS4 oh and PS2/xbox had an exercising games last gen, good games are there but people only focus on how Wii only has Wii Play and Carnival Games.

So popular opinion vs reality. Seems people love to live in fantasy land with the Wii. No offense you didn't mean it but the truth is out there.

Not in the way Wii is underpowered compared to its competitors. The PS2 was not so much less powerful than the Gamecube or Xbox. The Gamecube did not have DVD which was its downfall (its controller was awesome, though, it only missed a single button), and the Xbox, though a powerhouse (for its time), it had a sh1tty controller and no Japanese games. PS2 graphics did not pale in comparison to Xbox anyway, if you look at FFX, MGS2, Kingdom Hearts and God of War 2, those games were comparable in graphics to many Xbox titles.

Sixaxis a gimmick? Yeah, maybe, just like the Wiimote. You mention how PS2 and Xbox had exercising games, and while that is probably true, the consoles were not focused on that. PS2 did not focus on casual games or hardcore games, it focused on *everything*, which is why it was successful and everybody, from casuals to hardcore, loved it. That is why Nintendo fails, because they alienated the core consumers by just caring about the casuals, and taking advantage of how gullible they are.

read my last part. People only assume Wii has Carnival Games and Wii Fit and just casual games. That is not the case. Graphics only matter now because people just want a reason to hate the Wii. The Wii has all genres out and has plenty of gamer games but people who just want to not like the Wii will only talk about Cooking Momma.

Also as far as Wii Remote as a gimmick a gimmick is only if something promised doesn't deliver and last time I check the Wii Remote is used quite often for gaming while the sixaxis just is a tacked on feature on slim to no games. That's a bit of a difference right there.

Isaac the Xbox controller is the best controller in comfort made so far, wii mote feels good it just feels different to me. Just because you have girl hands doesn't mean you can complain about it. The "casuals" aren't a group and I bet half of them could kick your ass.

But I will still respond to this even though it will make me die a bit inside for continuing my fanboyism.

"Gimmick is the sixaxis"

I dont see how. They dont sell the ps3 based on its motion sensing ablities like the wii does. PS3 sells based on what its its whole console not its controller.

"Underpowered hardware was the PS2 last gen which did awesome"

Weaker hardware maybe but not underpowered. While ps3 was of a lower hardware it was only by a small amount. Wii hardware difference between its competitors is much more noticeable and it shows in its games.

Recycling franchises I'll point out everyone in the business

Sure but has any company other then nintendo made its franchise over 128 times (mario)? Other companies eventually know when to end a game and make a new innovative one but nintendo doesnt even want to take the risk. It shows weakness in terms of innovation but I will give them credit for marketing their overused games so long and fooling their fanbase into forgetting that they are overusing them.

Wii Fit isn't for everyone just like MGS4

I understand that but Nintendo wants everyone to use wii fit. Metal gear is just for the fans of the last 3.

oh and PS2/xbox had an exercising games last gen, good games are there but people only focus on how Wii only has Wii Play and Carnival Games.

Sure there are good games. I actually want to play metroid 3 because I played the first two on gamecube. I used to want to play brawl until I found out how they screwed it up so bad when I played it(dont get me wrong it was still playable but mellee is much better in my humble opinion). Everything else is games that that just dont fit the adolecent or the hardcore gamer.

PS360WII6420d ago

"Everything else is games that just dont fit the adolecent or the hardcore gamer" That I'll disagree on as well. I don't like to make lists but come on really if you believe that you must not of looked at the games out or just looked at the top 5 selling Wii games. There are already plenty of 'hardcore' games and ones for little teeny bopers.

Along with gimmick is something that'll make a sale. The Wii Remote actually does what it says while 1080P is the biggest gimmick of them all seeing that not even a handful of games actually run at 1080P heck most still can't run on 720P. So which truely is the gimmick!?

Also no on Mario too. (Sorry I feel we are at a standstill ><) There are only 8 real Mario games. The rest are like EA Sports and such having a main mascot for games.

For every negative for the Wii console you can find a negative for the other consoles. Which makes this gen really nice seeing that they all offer pluses and minuses and no one console can give you everything. You know the way it should be ;)

Wii hate threads are so common? If you don't own one why complain?

mryuckstickers6422d ago (Edited 6422d ago )

I personally used to love nintendo but ever since the sorry ds and the poor man version of a console wii showed up Nintendo has just been throwing crap at us. I don't mean any offense to wii lovers though. It's only my humble opinion.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails Beyond the Horizon Review [Capsule Computers]

Travis Bruno of Capsule Computers writes:

"It is hard to believe that there would be a time that not only would the Western releases of The Legend of Heroes franchise manage to catch up to the Japanese releases of this incredibly lengthy franchise, but that the game’s that helped kick it off would be getting remade at the very same time. A few months ago we reviewed the fresh remake of Nihon Falcom’s Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter and now here we are, visiting the most recent release in a story featuring characters and plot elements spanning all the way from that very first game twenty-two years ago. It’s not often that a video game sequel requires full knowledge of its predecessors, and in many ways The Legend of Heroes tried to do that with Daybreak, but now that everything has gathered together in The Legend of Heroes: Trails Beyond the Horizon, players best be ready for the most character packed, lore heavy, game of the franchise since Reverie."
